"Hi there! I am an experienced math tutor with a varied background in mathematics. I graduated from VCU with a degree in Applied Mathematics, and during that time was a Teaching Assistant for Algebra 2 and Precalculus. At VCU, I was also a paid undergraduate researcher and have been published in two different papers regarding both abstract and applied math. During that time, I began working at Mathnasium tutoring K-12, focusing on High School students in Algebra or above. During my last couple of years at VCU, I began working as a private tutor, and now have 4 years of tutoring experience doing virtual and in person private tutoring.
I prefer a visual, explanatory approach surrounding concepts and backgrounds as well as repetitive practice. I truly believe that there is nobody who is bad at math - just people who have not had it explained to them in a way they understand. I specialize in knowing tons of different approaches to the same problems and being able to explain them in a very real and physical way. When I tutor virtually, I use my iPad with pencil to write and work through problems with students similar to a whiteboard, so they can not only see the steps but work through it verbally as well. When in person I use a similar approach but with an actual whiteboard by working together in a library, or bringing my own whiteboard so we can work together.
I have experience in all sorts of teaching situations. I have assisted in classes of 150+, classes of 20-30, rooms of 10-15, individual small groups, and one one-on-one tutoring. Although all of my main experience has been paid, I have also participated in various math volunteer outreach programs, particularly ones geared towards getting young women involved and interested in STEM tracks." less...
