"Hello, I'm Rachel, a college freshman at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. I'm working towards my degree in Anthropology, and I've graduated high school in Franklin, TN with a 3.5 GPA and an ACT score of 35.

I have more experience babysitting than I do tutoring, mostly with small children in elementary years or younger. I've also tutored a few peers back in high school. My teaching methods usually consist of asking my student what they need help with, and giving them an explanation of how to work their problem with tricks to help them, and visuals to show the process as well. I then have them try a problem on their own, and if they still don't get it, I explain again, but more specific as to what they particularly struggled with that time. If they really can't get it, then I solve the problem, and then explain step by step how I got to my answer. While it's usually frowned upon to just "tell them the answer," I still do only when the child is truly stuck or getting overly frustrated, and I've found that doing the problem myself, slowly while narrating everything I do, instead of giving hints and similar-but-not-the-same equations, truly does help a lot of students learn. After showing them how I did the problem, I'll then try and have them do it on their own.

Most of my teaching sessions are one-on-one, as that allows area for concentration and bonding with my student. I want tutoring to be an enjoyable experience for them, so that they are more eager to learn and ask for help in the future." less...
