"I'm Richard! I have a Masters degree in English, as well as over thirty hours of graduate-level credit in the field of Religious Education. I have over twenty years of college-level teaching experience and over fifteen years of tutoring experience, at both the college and high-school levels.
I've taught many college courses. I started out teaching Composition courses and soon started teaching Religion sections as well. During my twenty-plus years of teaching, I've also taught Literature courses and Professional (Business) Writing courses. I take a dialogue-centered approach to teaching; I get a charge out of engaging with learners, whether they be high school age, college age, or non-traditional/adult.
During my early days of teaching, I noticed that conducting one-on-one writing conferences with students could often lead students to amazing progress in their writing. This observation was confirmed when I took a position as an Assistant Director of a Writing Center at a prestigious prep school, where I tutored for two years. Subsequently, I began tutoring at a community college, where I have served both as a Lead Tutor and a Coordinator. I take a dialogue-centered approach as I help students navigate the "process" of the four stages of writing (pre-writing, drafting, revising, and editing). In school tutoring and in freelance tutoring, I've helped folks with all manner of writing projects: college writing assignments in almost all subjects, college application letters, scholarship letters, dissertations, etc.
My tutoring experience has enabled me to develop a "feel" for all kinds of writing situations, and I am typically able to hone in on what kinds of help a student most needs during a session. What I love most about tutoring is witnessing those "light bulbs" come on for students, seeing students make breakthroughs with things they have previously struggled to understand and/or accomplish. I hope you will allow me to help you make breakthroughs in your own writing!" less...
