"Hello, I'm Nathan! I graduated cum laude from UC Santa Cruz with a Bachelor's degree in physics and from San Jose State with a Master's degree in physics with a 4.0 GPA. I have over ten years of tutoring experience in topics ranging from writing, math, physics, and standardized test preparation with students ranging from the elementary school to graduate school levels. I also have experience working with special-needs students, particularly neurodiverse students. Currently, I'm an associate faculty at Mission College, a community college in Santa Clara, CA, where I teach calculus-based introductory physics courses.
In my over ten years of tutoring, I've learned that the best tutors stand out not only for their command of the subject matter, but also for their empathy, perspective, and openness. With this in mind, I use a dynamical approach where I adjust my method to the student according to a multidimensional understanding of the student, which I acquire using my stellar interpersonal skills and an understanding of the subject matter from an eclectic mix of perspectives. I also acknowledge that the instructor-student interaction is not a monologue, but rather a dialogue: I am open to the thoughts and perspectives of the students, and use them to fit my teaching methods to their understanding and perspective. With this in mind, I always try to engage students in my tutoring sessions at a level where they are comfortable to enhance their learning. I also aim to ground the student's understanding of difficult topics by crafting examples and associations with things that are familiar to them.
