"Let my years of experience as both a teacher and tutor help you! I earned my B.A. in Mathematical Sciences from Clemson University with a minor in Philosophy, as well as an A.M. and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Dartmouth College. For the last twenty years, I have taught mathematics and statistics courses in the college classroom and online, winning awards for my teaching and my research. I love all things quantitative, including logic and puzzles, and bring that enthusiasm for mathematics everywhere I use it.
Starting in high school, I realized how much I enjoyed helping friends and classmates grasp some of the more difficult concepts in our classes. There are few feelings like seeing a frustrated friend smile at that “aha” moment. I tutored a number of my fellow students in high school and college in subjects ranging from 10th grade Geometry to Differential Equations. Since graduating I have tutored in a one-on-one setting for local high school and college students in both New Hampshire and Maine. In the last three years, I have tutored learners ranging in age from 10 to 50+, in topics including statistics, precalculus, calculus, multivariable calculus, and number theory.
My favorite college teachers introduced me to the effectiveness of both inquiry-based learning and groupwork in teaching mathematics. Both methods involve students working problems as not just practice, but a fundamental part of the learning process, exploring their ideas to build a more general concept. My tutoring style is also problem-based: I like to start with a small set of example problems to work on together. Each learner’s process is different, and I aim to explore what suits each one individually. There are often multiple ways to solve a problem, and I can flexibly verify which ones will always work. We then piece together the broader principles that help us come up with an effective general strategy.
