"My name is Kat and I graduated Cum Laude in 2017 from Wellesley College with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics. I also have an "unofficial" statistics/data science minor (the minor was only officially created the year after I left). Within my major, I focused primarily on econometrics, statistics, and applied data analysis. And I was able to combine those skills with my love of history to write my undergraduate honor thesis titled, Banking Crises at the Micro-Level: the Panic of 1837. After graduating I moved to Evanston to work as a research assistant for a finance professor at Kellogg Northwestern with the intent of eventually applying for a Ph.D. However, I found the most rewarding part of my job to be working with our undergraduate/high school interns.
Now I am working as AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) tutor at Evanston Township High School and have been specifically working with students learning statistics, algebra, pre-calculus, and discrete math.
From grade school up to my sophomore year of college, math was my worst subject and something I was afraid of. However, a few teachers in high school and in college helped me change my relationship and understanding of many topics in mathematics. Had I not had those incredible teaching experiences I don't think I would have discovered my ability to succeed in math based courses, let alone enjoy them. I feel particularly passionate about helping individuals with math because it is fundamental to all STEM fields and had I not had those linchpin learning experiences with amazing teachers, many educational fields would have been closed off to me." less...
