"I’m Professor John! I received my Masters degree from The University of Texas at San Antonio, and my PhD from Claremont Graduate University, both with high honors. In my studies, I realized that while the subject was important, only the professors could make the classes enjoyable. They were engaging and understandable when teaching, and they were friendly and helpful when I had questions. I try to emulate them in my teaching and my tutoring. because learning should be a pleasant experience. My lesson plans introduce the topic in a fun and creative manner, and then teach the subject at hand. I always allow time for students to work on their own so that students take ownership of what they have learned. I make adjustments according to individual student needs.

I have many years experience both as a teacher and a tutor. When I began the Masters in English Program at The University of Texas at San Antonio, I worked as a writing tutor at The Tutoring Center until I completed my MA. I worked with college students from across the disciplines, especially the Humanities, but also with science and engineering majors. I loved working one on one with college students from diverse backgrounds in race, gender, and field of study. Once I received my MA, I began to teach, but a teacher is quite often a tutor. I would use some class time for one on one sessions, but college courses offer limited time for that, so I would encourage students to stop by my office so that we could work uninterrupted on whatever each student needed. With longer high school classes, we generally had more time for one on one tutoring.

I want the students I work with to benefit as much as possible form what I bring to the experience.
