"My name is Alyssa! I have a PhD in English and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in Literature. I was often frustrated, both as a student and a teacher, with instructors who weren't focused on the objectives of the activities we were doing. As a tutor, I like my students to be aware of what we are trying to achieve with each activity so that they are properly motivated during the session. That includes meeting students and their parents where they are so that we don't set objectives that are not reasonable for us to reach within the desired time period. Meeting them where they are also includes the student's interests, as I believe that the best writing (especially for college essays, of course!) is done when students can connect a prompt with their own experiences.
I have a year's experience of tutoring in a University Writing Center. I worked one-on-one with students, sometimes in one-off sessions and sometimes on a weekly basis. I provided feedback on a variety of documents, including class essays, scholarship application essays, creative writing, and journal articles. I also have three years of classroom experience teaching writing, including giving lessons on the essay form, clarity in writing, and the proper use of vocabulary. I am thus most suited to tutoring that involves essay writing, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing portions on standardized tests (like the SAT, ACT, or LSAT), and/or other places where reading and writing are of importance.
At its heart, my tutoring approach is student-centered, and my objective-focused approach is meant to maximize the success of my students. I respond quickly to email, so feel free to contact me with questions or to schedule a free consultation! Out of respect for my time, 12 hours of notice is required for all cancellations." less...
