"I'm Jen. I have been teaching 33+ years and teaching remains my passion. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and Special Education and a Master's Degree in Reading Education. I have taught at every public school level in both reading and math. For the last 13 years, I have been a Reading and Math Interventist. I continue to stay abreast of current approaches to Common Core Math and have experience tutoring math through 7th grade.
Although I enjoy teaching math, reading is my first love. I completed my Master's degree many years ago but I often update my instructional methods through course work and workshops. I completed Reading Research to Classroom Practices about 5 years ago and most recently received my Certificate for LETRS (a two year class on the Science of Reading). I can also be found many evening participating in a webinar or listening to a blog on effective reading instruction.
I serve as a chair person for our Student Problem Solving Team. My responsibilities include looking at the whole student including their academic data and choosing appropriate interventions to best meet their needs. This role has reminded me that it is important to teach students from where they are at and build to where they need to be. one of the reasons I enjoy tutoring is we get to focus on individual children.
I enjoy collaborating with parents, caregivers and other teachers. My goal is to help students gain the confidence they need to challenge themselves and to take an active role in their own learning. I believe surrounding students with informed adults is the first step toward building competent learners.
I look forward to working with your child and you to make learning an enjoyable experience for the whole family." less...
