"I am a fun, energetic person looking forward to meeting students and helping them achieve necessary goals. I am a determined educator with a passion for teaching and I will do what it takes to make the content understandable to my students. I do not want students memorizing facts just to pass a test but to be able to apply what they have learned to real life situations. Having taught first grade for 12 years and kindergarten for 9, I feel like I have the expertise needed to do this. Over the past 20 years I have walked into a classroom daily and taught reading, science, social studies, and math to children aged 5-9. Other duties I’ve had include: preparing daily reading, math, science, and social studies lessons, attending monthly academic meetings and using data collection and analysis to plan for future lessons.

I worked weekly with a Reading Coach and an Academic leader to look at student data I collected on individual students. We analyzed student data and compared it to school wide data. I used the data to plan for reading, writing, and vocabulary instruction. I also attended monthly meetings to collaborate with grade level teachers and share ideas on how to effectively teach these subjects to students in our grade level. The reading coach and I co-taught many age appropriate writing lessons together.

I’ve done several book studies and implemented what I learned on phonics instruction in the classroom. I’ve taught long enough to watch the pendulum swing back again to the importance of phonics in our reading instruction. I taught reading for 20+ years incorporating phonics heavily depending on students’ ages and abilities.
