"Hey, there! I’m Mary. I have a BA in English Literature and a minor in Public Administration. I am currently in my 9th year of teaching, but I have been tutoring and educating young minds for many years! I hold certifications in K-6 General Education, ESOL, and 6th-12th English Literature.
I’ve wanted to be a teacher ever since I was a young girl accompanying my aunt to her kindergarten class when I visited her in NY each June during my summer break. Even back then, I enjoyed helping others grow, learn, and achieve more than they thought possible. I live for that “light bulb” moment; the moment when a struggling learner finally makes that connection or understands that concept that had been eluding them.
I specialize in essay writing and grammar. I enjoy helping others strengthen their writing skills. To do this, I employ lesson plans that activate a student’s prior knowledge through fun and engaging activities. Then, together, we dive deeper into various topics, skills, and concepts. Of course, one size does not fit all, so I am very flexible and able to adjust to the individual needs of each student.
Over the past few years, I have alternated between tutoring reading, writing, and intermediate science lessons at my school. I worked with groups of 4-7 students, from grades 2-8.
My goal is to help students strengthen their writing and grammar skills. In my experience, many students feel they are “bad” at these subjects, when in actuality, they simply haven’t unlocked their full potential. I emphasize breaking down these general, and sometimes overwhelming , subjects into smaller, manageable chunks of information that students can easily manage and utilize to improve all aspects of their education. As I always tell my students, I strive to provide you with various tools to use in your tool box to succeed. I am very easy to reach and look forward to working with you. Feel free to contact me with any questions or to book a lesson!" less...
