"Hi! My name is Kim and I obtained my BA (summa cum laude) in English at UC Santa Barbara and my MA in English at University at Buffalo. I've been an avid reader and writer my whole life, and part of what drives my passion is sharing the appreciation of reading and writing as a craft, whether it's critical/analytical or creative. I love learning about people by talking through a reading assignment or workshopping a piece of writing.

I have 6 years of English tutoring experience in informal and professional settings. For 2 years in high school, I spent weekends and summers tutoring the children of family friends in elementary reading and language arts, focusing on basic composition, grammar, and mechanics. In college, I tutored friends and colleagues taking general required language arts courses, by workshopping a variety of assignments ranging from reading responses to creative work to full research papers in informal sessions. I obtained a formal tutoring job during my senior year at UCSB's writing center, where I had the pleasure of working with an incredibly diverse group of students. This experience was incredibly rewarding as every student that I saw returned numerous times, happy with their good grades and increased confidence in their skills.

My approach places the emphasis on what students want to gain from tutoring and how they want to improve as readers/writers. My tutoring style is kind, patient, and also question-based to determine my students’ thought processes and what the assignments require, and I tailor my guidance accordingly. Asking frequent questions creates a dialogue that allows my students to express their thoughts in their own words and engage in their own learning.
