"My undergraduate degree is a BA in Mathematics, with a focus on teaching from the University of Northern Iowa, a school dedicated to training quality educators. My M.Ed. from Arizona State University was focused on teaching math at the middle school level. I was certified to teach, both in Iowa, and in Arizona.
I taught high school and community college mathematics on the Navajo reservation in New Mexico and Arizona, including subjects from Algebra 1 and Geometry all the way up to Calculus.
When I moved to the Phoenix area, I taught middle school and community college mathematics. At the community college, I taught a math class for students with math phobia, and very much enjoyed it. I love to show students new ways of learning math that they have never been introduced to, in order to make learning math easier and more fun. I also worked as a tutor in Arizona (Scottsdale) at a private tutoring company. The students I worked with there ranged in levels from middle school to high school, and they had varying abilities and learning challenges.
I've taught in school settings in various capacities for over 20 years, and have taught Geometry and Algebra most recently, from 2021-2024. The majority of my students have been high school students, but I also have a lot of experience in working with students at UC Berkeley (where I worked for 12 years), advising and mentoring students and teaching research and leadership skills.
I my one on one work with students, I use a socratic teaching approach, asking questions to allow students to develop their deeper reasoning and problem-solving skills, as well as strengthening their metacognitive skills as they learn to recognize what they know and what they don't know. I teach math in a way that makes it more fun and easier to understand. My goal for students is to help them be great lifelong learners and enjoy the learning process." less...
