"My name is Molly! I graduated summa cum laude from Barnard College with a philosophy major and sociology minor. I was a supervising public defense investigator for 3 years and am currently completing a postbac in psychology at Columbia University. One of the most rewarding aspects of my college experience was being a writing fellow. The training consisted of a semester-long writing and teaching pedagogy course that included hands-on practice and feedback.

After completing the course, I worked as a writing fellow for 3 years of college. During that time, I met with over 100 students who scheduled appointments at the writing center. The students wanted help with essays in a variety of subjects ranging from English and history to biology and economics. Some even brought graduate school personal statements. They came to the center at many stages of the essay-writing process. Some students were still playing around with ideas and wanted support coming up with their argument. Some had outlines that they wanted to flesh out, and some wanted someone to review essays that were almost finalized. I was happy to meet each student where they were. Each semester, I was also paired with a class. I would meet with each student on two essays throughout the semester to provide feedback. I worked with students in economics, philosophy, and English classes, and in my senior year, I worked with an English thesis class. Regardless of the subject, I was able to provide guidance on effectively organizing and articulating an argument.

My philosophy on essay editing is more conversation-based than directive. While I can certainly provide clear instruction on grammar and structure, I find that it is more effective to ask the right questions. The "right" questions are the ones that make you think about what you're actually trying to say and how you can most effectively say it.
