"I'm Sawyer! I'm currently a second year undergraduate in the honors college at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill pursuing a double B.S. in physics and math with a 3.72 GPA. In the past I worked as a math tutor for elementary and middle school students at a tutoring center, and this year I'm working as a tutor for other students at my university in algebra, calculus, and discrete math as well as introductory mechanics and electromagnetism, while taking a peer tutoring class. I am also a TA/instructor for a lab section of an introductory mechanics class at my school. I offer tutoring in physics topics including AP physics and introductory college-level mechanics and electricity and magnetism, and in math topics including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, calculus, and discrete math.
After studying tutoring methods extensively, my philosophy is that the best tutors will lead the student to make breakthroughs in understanding the material on their own. This philosophy is based on my own experience as a student, particularly studying math and sciences, as well as the writings of Dr.s Sandra McGuire and Barbara Oakley. I have always felt that I better remembered the things I figured out on my own, rather than had explained to me directly. I see tutoring sessions as a way for students to come in and have someone to bounce ideas off of and receive redirection, help making plans for how they will approach material in the future, and nudges in directions they might not have considered when thinking about the material on their own.
I look forward to working with you!" less...
