"Hello! Growing up in a house with a chemical engineer sparked my love and passion for science. I originally planned on using my science background to clean up water pollution from mining activities; however, I decided to become a high school teacher.
I have a very interdisciplinary science background which allows me to use examples from every day life in order to help students understand abstract scientific concepts. I also enjoy many hobbies: cooking, sourdough bread baking, coffee roasting, soap making, and vegetable fermentation which all involve chemistry. I love the outdoors and spend a lot of time camping and fly fishing. I enjoy tying my own flies and exploring Colorado and the west for all that it has to offer.
I have been teaching high school science since 2001. I began my career at Kennedy high school in Denver Public schools and then moved on to Cherry Creek high school. I have been teaching teaching Advanced Placement (AP) chemistry and honors chemistry for most of my career. My teaching has always involved helping students on a 1:1 basis or even in small group settings so I have a wealth of tutoring experience. I also worked as a tutor for many years mainly tutoring college level chemistry students but also algebra and Spanish.
Some of my interest and hobbies that I could always help you with: Cooking, soap making, coffee roasting, camping, hunting, guitar, scuba diving
I enjoy working with people and seeing them grow. The moment when a student "gets" something is special. I am patient and have many different ways of explaining difficult concepts. I have a very Socratic approach to teaching which involves asking many questions in order to help independent thinking. I am a life-long learner and wish the same for my students. I always look for suggestions from students and parents about how to best help a tutee.
I welcome the opportunity to help you achieve whatever your goals might be. I can be flexible with my scheduling." less...
