"Hey — I'm Beau (pronounced like bow). I'm a first-year student at MIT, studying Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), with a great passion for math and teaching. I've been a volunteer tutor for over four years now, having tutored hundreds of students at my high school on all levels of math, including calculus, pre-calculus, algebra I & 2, and geometry. All of my tutoring experience during high school was one-on-one, usually after school at the library. After high school, and a bit during my senior year, I also tutored SAT Math for a youth organization named NJ STARS, where I gained experience tutoring online via video call. During this experience, I constructed lesson plans, practice problems, and worksheets that helped students increase their scores by hundreds of points. As a freshman in college, much of the information I was taught in high school is still fresh, and the same methods that helped me earn a 790 on the SAT Math section and perfect scores in IB Mathematics and AP Calculus BC are the ones I now use to help my students achieve the same success.
Over the years, I've learned that friendly relationships between my students and me are essential to effective learning. In addition to teaching, I enjoy getting to know my students, as well as allowing them to get to know me, not just as a teacher but also as a person. Being comfortable with my students is very important to me; it establishes the best learning environment, where they feel at ease and are not afraid to ask questions. My teaching style is much more interactive than the traditional lecture that students would have in class; this is the main benefit of one-on-one sessions. Although most of my teaching materials include slideshows and worksheets, I actively encourage students to engage with the information by asking icebreakers for new concepts or guiding questions to ensure they understand the concepts. Ultimately, math is my passion, and I am willing to work with anyone on any level to share it with them." less...
