"I am a graduate of Ohio State University. I received my Ph.D. in Educational Studies, specializing in Quantitative Research, Evaluation, and Measurement. I have taught multiple statistics and research methods courses, from Intro to Statistics up through Multivariate Statistics, all using SPSS. The majority of my teaching and tutoring experience has been with graduate students from the social sciences. I recently began one-on-one tutoring online through a different platform, where I have maintained a 5 out of 5 rating.
My teaching philosophy is that anxiety around math and statistics should not get in the way of learning. As a student, I often witnessed situations where the professor would forget that their students are still novices and would assume that the logical connections were as obvious to the students as they were to themselves. Or I would see extremely intelligent classmates freeze up or tune out whenever the instructor wrote equations on the board. As an instructor, I tried to help my students sift through the noise and focus on understanding the core concepts in a low-pressure environment. My instructional approach is to use analogies and multiple examples in my explanations of concepts and to remind students of how new topics build on top of what came before. I've found that doing this helps students understand the logic behind statistics and research methods, and it makes the connections between topics more explicit even if the math involved remains opaque. I also believe that we often learn best when we're allowed to make mistakes and correct them. I emphasize this thought process in my teaching and tutoring, and I will often try to start from the students' current level of understanding, correct any misconceptions, and then build up from there.
Feel free to contact me with any additional questions and/or to schedule a session. If possible when scheduling, include a syllabus of the course you need help with." less...
