"Hello, I'm Ian.

I studied English literature at the University of California, Santa Barbara, out of my enjoyment and academic success with reading and writing. I enjoy providing writing feedback and helping develop clear writing and thinking. Ultimately, it is my goal as a tutor to make learning stress-free and enjoyable for students.

I began tutoring in 2018, substitute teaching in 2019, and teaching ESL in Ecuador in 2020. I value tutoring because it allows students to identify and focus on their personal goals, strengths, and weaknesses. Tutors can provide direct support, and ultimately teach students better understand and feel more in control of their own learning process. I believe one of my strengths as a tutor is providing feedback and reinforcement of concepts, (rather than shorter term memorization), so that students understand the "how" and "why" of what they are learning.

I have also worked with students, ages 5 to 18, teaching math up to the Algebra 2 level. I have been a long-term substitute teacher for high school Algebra 1 classes on multiple occasions, and enjoy the objective and step-by-step of teaching math.

In 2020, I worked as an ESL teacher at the CEDEI language institute in Cuenca, Ecuador. As a student, I have studied and achieved fluency in Spanish and German. Being familiar with the challenges and necessary skills for language learning has provided the experience for teaching languages in an efficient and supportive way.
