"Hi, I'm Eric!
As far back as I can remember, I wanted to be a physicist, and single-mindedly focused on that goal in school to the detriment of all else. It was in college that I found the first inflection point in my education: how much good mentoring can help you navigate challenges. With guidance from history professor I gained confidence in what was my worst subject and graduated with honor with a BS in both astrophysics and history. From there, I moved to Scotland to pursue a master's degree in literature, where I graduated with distinction, before I returned to pursue a PhD in computational astrophysics. This is where I reached the second point of inflection. In the course of my PhD studies, I realized that my passion wasn't in research, but in helping others understand things using their own language. Reflecting back on how my history professor spent hours helping me analyze texts, I spent my evenings and weekends chasing down new and creative ways my students had gone wrong and showing them how to correct those mistakes in ways they would understand.
I have over 10 years tutoring experience: I began tutoring graduate level physics through the deans' office when I was an undergrad at Caltech, and continued as a peer tutor at Harvard teaching freshman calculus. I had repeat clients who requested me and referred their friends to me. In the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, I left grad school with a master's degree in astrophysics to teach high school math and physics full time. I have taught at all levels from pre-algebra to multivariable calculus (with AP physics on the side).
I specialize in students with unique learning styles, particularly those situated on the autism-ADHD spectrum and meet them where they are comfortable, whether that is one-to-one or in a classroom setting. My approaches are varied, and tailored to the individual student—I make use of simulations, digital and physical manipulatives, and projects, as needed.
