"I am a certified teacher with 20+ years of teaching experience who provides tutoring services during after-school, evening, and weekend hours. I specialize in tutoring struggling readers and spellers, including those with dyslexia or characteristics of dyslexia. I am trained in SPIRE, an Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching reading, and I most often use the Barton Reading and Spelling System with students ages 5 through adult in my sessions. Barton is another Orton-Gillingham based, research-supported program that is very effective with students who struggle with phonics, decoding, and spelling. I see tremendous growth in my Barton students; it is not uncommon for them to progress from reading below grade level to reading at, or above, grade level within one year’s time. If comprehension requires intervention, I am also trained in and can highly recommend the Lindamood-Bell Visualizing and Verbalizing program.
For deaf and hard of hearing students, including those who use ASL, I love adapting these programs to meet the abilities and needs of my D/HH learners. I also use programs designed specifically for the D/HH population, including Bedrock and Fairview. I tutor Deaf students who attend Gallaudet University and who seek to improve their English vocabulary, reading comprehension, English grammar, and essay-writing skills. I also love working with students of all ages who are learning ASL to provide additional practice in the language.
I have all 5 star reviews on Wyzant, and I am passionate about providing services which exceed the expectations of my students. I believe in establishing positive relationships that allow my students to feel comfortable and safe in their interactions with me. It is infinitely rewarding to witness the growth in skills they inevitably demonstrate, but even more rewarding to witness the growth in confidence. Language and reading unlock the world. I hope to have the privilege of working with you or your child and being instrumental in helping you gain access to those keys." less...
