"Hi! My name is David. From building electric circuits and robots as a child to double majoring in computer science and math with a perfect 4.0 GPA to earning my PhD in computer science, I've had a strong passion for learning and academics for as long as I can remember. I've also always enjoyed sharing things I've learned with others. Sometimes, I gave them much greater detail than they would have preferred!

As an undergraduate, I gained experience tutoring other college students in my computer science and math classes and I had the opportunity to acquire further teaching experience as a TA in graduate school. Courses I have helped with include algorithms, programming, group theory, abstract algebra and analysis.

My teaching philosophy is focused on building an understanding of the fundamentals and developing the student's problem solving skills rather than relying on memorization. I have found that this is the best way to prepare for any problem that the student may encounter and ensure their future success.

I have deep knowledge of many areas of computer science and math with particular emphasis on discrete math and algorithms. My extensive programming experience includes languages such as C, C++, Java, Python, Matlab, Common Lisp, Emacs Lisp, Bash and others. Emacs is my editor of choice and I have many years of experience with it.

I have played chess since I was a young child, was state champion for my age group and have experience teaching chess. I participate regularly in online classical tournaments (primarily the lichess4545 league) and my lichess classical rating is over 2200.

I have also earned numerous academic awards including a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Postdoctoral Fellowship, a Simons Award for Graduate Students in Theoretical Computer Science and a National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship (among others).
