"Hi! My name is Camila and I am currently a graduate student at Northwestern University, getting my Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy. I have recently graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology with a minor in Linguistics. I am originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil and learned English when I moved to the United States when I was in Middle School. I am passionate about helping others learn English and improve their reading and writing skills.
I have had a lot of experience with tutoring, specifically English and ESL! I started tutoring students when I was in middle school by working with ESL first-graders in order to improve their reading scores. I got matched with a little Brazilian girl, with whom I could speak in both English and Portuguese and help address her issues in understanding the passages. In high school, I joined another after-school tutoring program with ESL students. This time, I worked with middle schoolers, who were native Spanish speakers, to assist them with their homework.
During the pandemic, I joined an online tutoring program with students in Vietnam, and even without knowing the language, I was able to teach English to my students in a dynamic way! It was a rewarding experience for me as I realized that I did not need to speak their native language to teach English, as long as they knew basic English and I was able to come up with creative lessons!
The key to tutoring is to understand the best way for you, my students, to learn and take it from there. Some kids are visual learners while others are auditory learners, and once I understand the best way for them to learn, I can provide the resources that will most effectively improve their learning path. It is important to me that my students feel comfortable with me, to ask questions and speak up if the methods we are using are not helpful. With this, I will train you to be able to study and understand the material on your own!" less...
