"I have 26+ years experience teaching students who need more specialized instruction than their classroom teacher or homeschool parent are able to provide. These are students who have difficulty learning to read, write or solve math problems despite putting in a lot of time and effort. Or they may be able to read fluently, but they struggle to express their understanding of the text. Some students are able to verbally explain what they are learning, but cannot write much about it. They may have a hard time with attention or need movement and frequent interaction built into their learning. Or they may have anxiety around making mistakes, so they struggle to get started. I enjoy the challenge of figuring out what instructional approach will work for each student and I love to see students' progress.

I believe that students learn better when they are having fun, so I incorporate games, art materials, math manipulatives, small toys, interactive slides, etc. depending on students' interests and strengths. I track student progress weekly, so students can celebrate their success and I can quickly adjust my instruction if progress isn't on track.

I have a bachelor's degree in special education from Brigham Young University and a master's degree in education from Boise State University. I have taught elementary special education in public school settings in Utah, Idaho, and Alaska. I've also tutored students in their homes or at the public library.
