"Hi, I’m Darby! I hold a B.S. in Earth and Space Exploration (Geological Sciences) and work full-time in Geotechnical Engineering. I’ve been tutoring for over a decade—starting in high school with classmates and siblings, then at a recreation center with 3rd–6th graders, and continuing to support students from elementary through college.

My style is patient, encouraging, and flexible. I break concepts into manageable steps and explain them from different angles until they make sense. Since I wasn’t a “natural” at math myself, I know how to meet students where they are and guide them toward confidence and independence.

Subjects:

I tutor math, science, and test prep. In geology/earth science, I focus on K–12 and introductory (100-level) college courses. Graduate-level requests, hydrology, structural geology, and mineralogy are not offered. If unsure, send notes or assignments before booking.

What to Expect:

I begin by observing how students solve problems, then guide with hints, examples, and questions that build independence. As understanding grows, students may explain problems back or tackle challenge questions. Stronger students often focus on tricky problems, preparing ahead, or extending beyond class material. Bring notes, homework, or textbooks; sending questions in advance helps me prepare. A notebook and pencil are essential, calculators recommended for secondary math/science, and younger learners can use interactive tools that make learning fun.

Policies & Rates:

• 2 hours’ notice required. Late cancellations billed 50%, no-shows 100%.

• $60/hr online, $60/hr at my downtown Tacoma office (discounted), $75/hr outside my office.
