"I have worked as a tutor for academic achievement programs for the past 5 years, mentoring my peers and underclassmen. As I gained more experience academically and professionally, I continued to incorporate new teaching styles for an increasingly more diverse student population. My bachelor’s degree in Public Health Science required a mastery of both STEM and Humanities subjects, equipping me to effectively teach a myriad of subjects. As a medical student, I have a unique perspective to time management, organization, study skills, and more that will undoubtedly benefit many different students.
In less than two years of tutoring at the University of Maryland I was certified as a Level III Master Tutor through the College Reading and Language Association. This was the fastest a tutor had ever reached that level of certification, and that was due to the large volume of tutoring I completed and consistent positive outcomes for my students. I have no problem tutoring STEM, Humanities, or literary subjects. In regards to standardized exams, I can effectively tutor the SAT, ACT, or MCAT.
Throughout my time as a tutor and mentor, I have had many students who struggled academically due to ADHD or executive function challenges. With experience, I have developed a teaching and mentoring style that focuses on key areas for these students. These areas include planning, organization, time management, task completion, and goal setting. I provide proactive support, guidance, and oversight to ensure my students have goals and stay on track. Using this technique, my students flourish academically and professionally after mastering the skills I teach.
As someone who had to work through college to pay for my education, my teaching style emphasizes time management and efficient studying. These were things that were essential for me to excel academically and develop a strong application for medical school. I believe that these skills will be essential for every student, no matter what professional goals they may have." less...
