"Hi there! My name is Finn and I am so excited for the opportunity to become your tutor!
I am currently an Undergraduate student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and will be obtaining my BS in Psychology next year. I studied in San Diego for my High School years and while doing so I received exemplary marks on the AP Exams for Psychology, Environmental Science, Statistics, US History, and Macroeconomics. I have been able to use my knowledge and unique insights on these exams to help students excel in their own test taking.
I have spent the last 3 years tutoring grades K-12 in Math, Science, History, and Social Sciences. I have worked for a handful of different companies with different formats of student to tutor relations, this includes 1 on 1, working with a group, and recording tutoring videos for students. My experience in the last year however has been working with students 1 on 1, online and for extended periods of time (~8 months).
Through my diverse working experiences, I have crafted my own approach to tutoring. It is incredibly important to highlight the engagement and intrigue of a student when trying to help them learn in a tutoring session. I have seen so many students that “struggle” with learning material, just because they haven’t had someone show them how it’s interesting.
This is the reason I make sure to tie the student’s interests into my lessons, they remember more of what I say when I convey it in a funny or relatable way and are able to ask me more questions about it when they are confused. My other strategy that I use is incorporating more visual representations of ideas. It is always easier to understand / remember something when you can see it as well as hear it. Because of this I make a point use lots of visual aids as well as tangible metaphors. I find this really helps draw out complex subjects and make them more approachable.
I hope that through this you have gotten a glimpse of who I am as a tutor and I hope to see you in “Class” soon!" less...
