"Hey, I'm Meghan! I've graduated with a bachelors and masters in biology at Cal Poly Pomona, with summa cum laude honors. I've been tutoring and teaching for 8 years, and first started in college when I noticed that I enjoyed helping my peers in study groups. I started tutoring as a biology learning assistant (Bio LA), where I worked with students one-on-one and in small and large groups. I received an award for spectacular tutoring during my time as a Bio LA. After receiving my bachelors, I worked at Mathnasium tutoring students K-8. It was then I got a lot of experience tele-tutoring, and learned interesting ways to keep student's attention on learning even when not in the same physical space. It was fun finding ways to keep students invested in a subject they may not initially enjoy— which is common in math and science. Most recently while doing my masters, I worked as a graduate teaching assistant, where I oversaw a lab of 24 non-biology major undergraduate students. They all had varied backgrounds, experiences, and levels of interest in biology, but by the end of the course, had gathered a newfound fascination and understanding of how biology relates to their own life.

In my time as a tutor and teacher, I have gathered skills in educating subjects outside of a student's purview. I like to focus on the source material of a course and re-iterate it in a new way, using analogies and references to the student's background and previous experiences. I also take the source material and translate it into questions or study guides, to test the understanding of concepts instead of memorizing terms and facts. This promotes student's metacognition, helping students realize what they understand and what they need to practice, preparing them for exams.
