"My very first experiences as a tutor were in high school, volunteering twice a week at my former elementary school working with students on reading and math. My educational background is in chemistry, with a bachelor's degree from the University of South Florida and a master's degree from Duke University. Throughout my years of education I worked as a tutor, at the walk in center at USF and through Duke's tutoring program serving student-athletes. I also worked as a teaching assistant while a graduate student at Duke. My tutoring approach grew across these years and I had the opportunity to tutor in a range of subjects, different levels and specializations of chemistry, various areas of math, physics, as well as general test preparation.
I taught at the high school level in Florida for 8 years, primarily in chemistry where I taught at several levels, chemistry 1, chemistry 1 honors, and dual enrollment chemistry. I became certified in physics as well and taught several sections of a conceptual physics course in my final year as a teacher. Some of my favorite moments were when I could work one-on-one with a student who needed additional assistance in certain areas. My approach generally involves empowering the student to develop their problem-solving skills by modelling my own approach to solving the problem first, then talking through similar problems together, then gradually scaling back the level of assistance provided when the student is ready to solve it on their own.
While I have moved out of teaching at the same time as moving from Florida to Connecticut, I remain in education in a more behind the scenes role and look forward to continue doing what I can to help students gain the confidence and skills needed to succeed in math, physics, and chemistry, subjects I love to learn and teach about but which can be challenging and intimidating for many. I love helping students grow and gain the confidence that yes, it is hard, and they can do it!" less...
