"Hello, my name is Josh! I'm a former Tutor and High School Math Teacher looking to get back into tutoring.
I graduated from the University of California San Diego with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, but I knew right before graduating that working in the industry was not for me. Wanting to find more fulfilling work where I'm directly impacting communities near me, my journey led me towards education. I first worked as a tutor at a well-known learning center for over 2 years teaching math to primarily middle and high school students in groups of 5-9. That experience led me to pursue my mathematics teaching credential at San Diego State University before moving up to Los Angeles to teach High School Math in the Los Angeles Unified School District for 5 years, including 3 years at Carson High School. And now as a tutor, I'm hoping to continue impacting communities in the South Bay!
As a math tutor, I enjoy being able to build rapport with my students. Math as a subject can be difficult for students to relate to, but I try my best to understand where my students are coming from and relate math to their interests. I try to teach math topics in different ways and bring them into the real world if I can. As a math teacher, I learned about the different Common Core Standards and Objectives that our states want to focus on, as well as familiarized myself with different math curriculum and resources that school provide to our students (like IXL and Illustrative Mathematics). Even as a teacher, my favorite experiences have been directly working with students individually or in small groups, as I really got to hear what students wanted help in and find ways to make math personal to them." less...
