"Hello, I’m Carmen! I completed a dual-degree program at Northwestern University, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, and magna cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Music. Throughout college, I tutored groups of 10 first- and second-year students who were struggling in their single variable-, multivariable-, and pre-calculus classes. I also served as a teaching assistant for the Math department, supporting students in the classroom and during office hours as they navigated stressful courses and prepared for exams. These days, I work for a non-profit tutoring 9th and 10th grade students one-on-one in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and Spanish. I also teach prep classes for both the written and verbal sections of the SAT.
I am firmly committed to my students’ success. Throughout my years tutoring (and my time spent working at the National Museum of Mathematics) I have honed my ability to patiently break down complex concepts in an engaging and friendly way. In turn, I welcome feedback from students and parents. I tailor sessions to learners’ individual needs by pushing students to gain understanding on their own; rather than assuming the role of a lecturer, I aim to primarily ask questions while encouraging students to do much of the talking. Attentive listening allows me to locate the root of each student’s confusion, boosts students’ confidence in their own knowledge, and encourages critical thinking instead of passive reception. I consider teaching to be more of a calling than merely a temporary “gig”, and I am passionate about helping students reach their full potential in a supportive, empathetic space.
If you think we could be a good match, don’t hesitate to reach out; I respond quickly and am always happy to chat more. I look forward to hearing from you!" less...
