"I am a scientist, humanist, problem solver, and teacher. I received my B.A. with distinction in English literature from Connecticut College, completed graduate work in English literature at Middlebury College, and completed an intensive program in basic and laboratory sciences at the University of Virginia. Throughout my education, I have served as a tutor and mentor, both informally to my peers, and formally to students of all ages, backgrounds, and learning styles. I am currently a student in the M.D. program at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, and one of my primary roles as a physician will be that of educator. I hope to work in an academic setting, providing guidance not only to my patients but also to physicians-in-training.
I love to help students achieve confidence with difficult concepts, solve problems, and improve their learning process. I adapt my teaching style to the subject at hand and to the needs of each student. I commonly utilize Socratic dialogue (leading the student to understanding via a series of questions), guided problem solving, and detailed concept review using a variety of materials. I aim to base all of my lessons in conversation, fostering students' engagement in material and willingness to ask questions, as well as providing the opportunity for prompt, thorough, patient feedback. This kind of personalized feedback, as well as effective self-reflection and continuous process improvement are skills that are under-nurtured in the classroom but are critical to student success. With this in view, I work with students to understand content, but it is always my goal to help them see a specific concept or problem in the larger context of fostering these essential skills." less...
