"Hello Wyzant! My name is Finn and I am a graduate from the Georgetown University College of Arts & Sciences Class of 2024. While majoring in anthropology, I completed all pre-med science courses and conducted research in the physics department. I just took the MCAT in the middle of March this year, scoring a 513 and looking to apply to medical schools in the upcoming year. Tutors I met through Wyzant were amazing to work with and pivotal for my achievement on the exam. Additionally, I graduated cum-laude from Harvard-Westlake School in 2020. I received a 5 in both the AP Physics 1 and Calculus BC exams.

For 2 years I tutored with GUMSHOE (Georgetown University Math & Science Hands-On Enrichment), a student-run math and science outreach organization that provides math and science help to K-12 students across Washington, D.C. public schools. I really enjoyed this volunteer opportunity to work with students in person and learn the ropes of tutoring/teaching in both a one-on-one and small group setting. The majority of my one-on-one students were in the 5th grade (ages 10-11) and I found it really rewarding to see familiar faces every week and get to know them. Working with small groups of 3rd grade students in their classroom was relatively challenging as it’s easier to work with students that are eager to get the help as opposed to students at the end of the day just looking to chill out. (I really enjoyed showing them some of my favorite computer games, however!)

During these tutoring sessions after school, I would create problem sets for students that resembled the level of difficulty of their current math coursework before increasing the difficulty, incrementally. While assisting on homework, if a student found a question challenging, we would work together and I'd ask them to lead me through their thought process for the specific question. By not just spelling out a solution off the bat, it became much easier to target where exactly issues lied in a student's approach by tracking their steps." less...
