"As a calculus, linear algebra, and precalculus instructor at Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia, I saw the problems most students face on a daily basis. Too often in math, the student tries to memorize a technique rather than understand and comprehend it. Math is a foundational subject -- each area must be learned and understood before proceeding to the next. Just like building a house, if there are gaps in the foundation, i.e. understanding in the earlier subjects, then the rest of the house, that is the comprehension of higher subjects, will be very shaky.

Math has always been a lifelong love and talent of mine. I competed in national math competitions (ARML) in high school, and I now have a Ph.D. in Mathematics, as well as a Masters degree in Operations Research.). Further, I have several years of experience teaching and tutoring math in the classroom and one-on-one. My education is broad, however, as I also have a law degree and practiced law for many years in New York and Georgia. My teaching and legal experience have greatly enhanced my ability to communicate with students to help them decipher what is, to them, a foreign language -- the terms and symbols of mathematics.

It is very important for me to see my students succeed. Math is so critical in many different career paths, so it can be crucial that students effectively use it in order to flourish. Every student is different, and I work hard to find whatever works for that person. In working with my students, I do more than just teach them the so-called "tricks" of math. Instead, I work towards helping them see the bigger picture. With greater understanding, they can work better on their own." less...
