"Hi, I'm John! I have an M.Sc. in Mathematics (earned with a Distinction) and top scores on the GMAT (770), GRE (170q/167v), and LSAT (175). I am also a Graduate Statistician of the Royal Statistical Society. I have been doing Math and Test Prep tutoring since 2011.
What I've found in the various fields I've studied and tutored is that almost everything becomes easier to understand once you have a concrete example in mind. If you're trying to figure out the relationships among speed, distance, and time, it helps to imagine an actual car trip. If you want to calculate probabilities of coin flips, you should consider some specific sequences of heads and tails. We learn through examples, describing and manipulating details as we advance our comprehension. It's a challenging process, but a very natural one.
Another important aspect of my tutoring style is flexibility. I adjust my explanations to your mental framework and build on what you already know. Often, a student understands 90% of a concept, and only needs help figuring out that last 10%. I try to give my students just enough guidance to complete their understanding, without needlessly overhauling their whole approach. Sometimes this means allowing you to do things in a nonstandard way, if that's what you're comfortable with. There are usually various approaches to a problem, and I can teach them all.
I know my methods work--I've been using them successfully for over a decade, primarily in one-on-one tutoring as a freelancer. I've helped struggling GMAT and LSAT students break 90th percentile. Students who thought they hated statistics have ended up at the top of their class. For me, the biggest reward is seeing how much confidence my students gain. I think most people are smarter than they realize, and I enjoy helping them discover that.
Let me know if you have any questions or requests. I look forward to hearing from you!" less...
