"I am a third year physics PhD candidate at the University of Utah. After two years teaching the introductory physics lab classes (Phys. 2015/2025), I currently work as a research assistant. My research expertise is in quasars, black holes whose light has traveled billions of years to reach earth! I love talking to my students more about this, as long as they have already learned what they came to learn of course :)
Although research keeps me pretty busy, nothing beats seeing the lightbulb turn on as a student has that "eureka" moment after guidance on a challenging problem. The fulfillment tutoring brings has made it a passion of mine for more than seven years. During my time at Ohio State, I was a campus tutor for three years, teaching students in a 1:1 setting both virtually (Zoom) and in person, when possible. During my teaching assistantship in Utah, I taught formal lectures weekly and in more personal settings during office hours.
I am most experienced tutoring topics covered in algebra and calculus based physics 1 & 2 / AP, calculus 1 and 2 / AB / BC, high school and college algebra, precalculus, and trigonometry. I have an extensive education in physics, and some advanced math (lin. alg., diff eqs., proof writing), so I am confident I could teach upper-division courses given a reasonable heads-up to prepare.
The breath of students I have taught and my subject expertise ensure I can meet any student at their level, including high-school students. I work best with students who have a genuine curiosity about the material, or are communicative when they don't understand something. My style is to ask questions as a student is working out a problem to develop an understanding beyond surface level, crucial for true learning (and doing well on tests!) As I work with a student, I learn what they respond to best, and adapt my teaching style to accommodate, including using visualizations. My goal is to foster general problem skills by teaching students the "why", and guiding them through the "how"." less...
