"My name is Zahreeyat (Zahra), and I am a first year student at Occidental College following the Pre-Law Politics major track. I recently graduated from St Mary’s Academy in May from Portland, Oregon.
I have experience mentoring through several structured and informal settings. Most notably, I founded PDX Future Voters (a product of year-long research under PhD candidate Sam Koreman), a civic engagement website that requires me to teach youth across Oregon about political processes and voting, I was an active member and leader of UNITE, my school’s student-led event where students have the opportunity to present on any topic to educate their community. Additionally, as captain for my school’s Mock Trial team, I guided younger teammates in understanding legal concepts, organizing strategies, and improving public speaking skills. I continue to speak at Portland Community College’s Youth Ethnic Convention, presenting biannually to over 300 high schoolers and teachers from Oregon. In high school, I was also a part of my school’s mentorship program. Lead Like a Girl, where I mentored 5th graders on leadership, writing, and math. My teaching style is interactive and student-centered, focusing heavily on understanding over memorization.
In high school I took the following: AP Human Geography, AP Language and Composition, AP Literature, AP Physics 2. Every course I took in high school was advanced as it was all college preparatory. In math, I have taken every level until Calculus, and have taken Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and AP Physics 2 for sciences. Additionally, I took two college history courses (PSU Challenge US History & PSU Challenge History of Modern Europe) while in high school. While taking my SAT’s I scored a 710 in English and writing (97th percentile) and a 660 in Math (89th percentile).
I am confident that my combination of academic preparation, mentoring experience, and commitment to helping students achieve their goals makes me well suited to provide high quality tutoring support." less...
