"Hello, I'm Hannah. I'm a professional writer & poet with over six years of tutoring & teaching experience. After graduating magna cum laude from George Fox University with my BA in English, I went on to receive my Master's of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at the University of Virginia. While there, I taught freshmen-level composition & rhetoric courses, as well as introduction to poetry writing. In both undergraduate and graduate school, I also worked at my university writing centers, where I provided academic counseling and writing coaching to students one-on-one. Since receiving my Master's, I've continued to work with both college & high school students in a variety of settings, teaching subjects such as literature, writing composition, nature writing, and creative writing.
What excites me about tutoring is the opportunity to share my passion for writing with another person. While I enjoy supporting students in learning skills such as grammar or proofreading, I believe that confident & compelling writing begins with connecting with yourself, your own ideas & passions. In this way, I always aim to connect my students to their own writing projects, to demystify the writing process & to set tangible goals for their learning. I use a Socratic tutoring method, which empowers my students to articulate their own choices and become self-aware about how their decisions about sentence structure or paragraph arrangement might affect their readers. I provide a supportive and strengths-based environment for learning that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and play. Whether you're looking to receive an A on an English paper or write a compelling cover letter for a job application, I believe that working past the anxiety of the blank page and finding enjoyment in writing is the first step to helping you succeed." less...
