"I have bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics and in Chemistry, along with a minor in Spanish. For all my time working in education, engaging with students has been the most enjoyable facet. I have always loved working with someone who is eager to learn. Simply put, helping a student learn new concepts, and to pass on timeless ideas, is immensely rewarding. Personally, I find my skills best put to use in the regions of mathematics and science, specifically chemistry.
During high school, I regularly tutored students. I was frequently asked by friends for help in understanding topics or completing homework in a 1-on-1 or small group setting. I found real satisfaction in helping. I feel quite comfortable dealing with high school and junior high students.
I worked as a Teacher’s Assistant while I achieved my bachelor’s degrees. For 3-4 years, I would assist in chemical laboratories, helping students complete experiments, write up reports, and with tutoring. I was able to direct an entire class, but would also work with each student individually to ensure success. I believe highly in focusing on concepts, addressing confusion, and the power of practice. I think it is crucial to listen to students, pausing to see if they understand and retain the material, and asking them to describe a concept in their own language. These are foundational to student success.
I later attended graduate school at Purdue. For 5 semesters, I worked as a TA. Two of those were in a quantum mechanics lecture, where I would help students in small groups or 1-on-1. The other 3 semesters, I taught a laboratory and led a recitation. This meant engaging the whole class for a lecture, and also individually for problem solving. Leading my own class was such a rewarding experience. It was so special to teach students and help them understand the material. I look forward to helping you as well, and best of luck on your path of learning." less...
