"Hello, I'm Joshua! I have been a high school social studies teacher in the Commonwealth of Virginia for three years. I have Bachelor's degrees in economics from Virginia Tech, and history from VCU. I also have a Master's degree in social studies education from VCU. To me, history represents a rich, though sometimes daunting, tapestry of stories, government, and cultures through time, and I am committed to help guide students' exploration of these topics. I have tutored dozens of students over the course of my time as a teacher whenever they struggled to grasp new topics or concepts, and I have experience in an informal position of tutoring friends and friends-of-friends. My goal is to make social studies come alive, rather than focus on rote memorization, to foster critical thinking, analytical skills, and a deeper understanding of the world around us. I believe in creating an engaging and supportive learning environment where every student can build confidence and excel.
My approach to teaching is designed to empower students to become independent learners and critical thinkers. We'll work together to connect historical events and concepts to their broader context, making them more meaningful and memorable. I can teach students how to analyze primary and secondary sources effectively which is crucial, not just for social studies, but also for navigating our media fueled world. We can also work on essential academic skills such as research and writing well-supported essays. I have experience teaching VA/US Government, VA/US History, World History 1500-now,
I view tutoring as an opportunity for two-way learning. I hope to teach students, and I hope that they are able to help teach me how to be a more effective instructor. To that end, I welcome any and all resources or suggestions that may help me to achieve this. My schedule is flexible to work around times that work best for you, and I will respond quickly to your messages. I look forward to working with you!" less...
