"Tutoring is what I do! Also, I often accompany parents to school conferences, advocate for my students, and research any learning differences. HAVE CONSISTENTLY SERVED AT LEAST 5 - 7 STUDENTS EACH SEMESTER OVER THE PAST 7 YEARS.

Over the past decade, the progression for me, has been from high school teacher to tutor; this has allowed me to provide in-depth support to a variety of students. Currently, in 2014, I serve (or have served,) one 2nd grader,(NISD) 5 grade school/elementary students,(Both were HOMESCHOOLED by moi) twins going into 6th grader at NEISD, one middle school student,(NISD) and one UTSA student.

Many, but not all of my students - past and current - have learning challenges. It is my job to help my students to find a way to learn the material. To facilitate this, I use a variety of approaches.

For younger students, I use manipulatives, workbooks, and oral instruction. All younger students read orally with me - while I help them to sound out unfamiliar words and to find the meanings of difficult words. I suggest that parents purchase a children's dictionary so that children can begin to "solve their own" challenges and become a more self- directed learner. with math, I use manipulatives - items that students can feel, touch, and move about to make math more understandable. Together, we go through the dreaded word or "story problems" and break the work up into manageable steps. For writing, I help the students to use "graphic organizers" to get their thoughts in order.

Older students generally need help organizing and keeping track of their projects. Together, we keep track of upcoming tests, and budget the time for reading longer passages, chapters in textbooks, and novels. For students who are on track or gifted, I provide opportunities for enrichment. This allows them to pursue a special interest that their school does not offer, to learn more than is taught in the classroom so that they can compete for scholarships, and to help them become a more independent and creative learner.
