"Hi! I'm Sofia and I’m currently a sophomore at Stony Brook University majoring in Astronomy. Before that, I attended Sunlake High School in the Tampa Bay region of Florida, where I took a range of advanced courses (AP and Honors) and participated in dual enrollment with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Pasco-Hernando State College. I was always the friend that helped my peers in my classes and I recently got recommended by one of them to try tutoring for others so here I am :).
I earned strong grades across all my classes, but I feel especially confident supporting students in humanities-based subjects. That may sound unexpected considering my major, but I believe the humanities are essential for any student pursuing science research. The ability to write clearly and communicate complex ideas is just as important as analyzing complex data. You can solve the most complex problems in science, but if you cannot engage your audience with clear and concise language, your research loses footing and its impact becomes limited. With that said, my experience in both areas has shown me how writing and analytical reading strengthen not just essays, but scientific thinking as well.
In terms of credentials, I scored a 5 on the AP U.S. History exam and earned A's in English Composition I and II. I would be a great tutor for students in subjects like U.S. History, Civics/Government, and English Language Arts, as well as essay writing, reading comprehension, grammar, and college application essays. In math, I can support middle and high school students in Pre-Algebra, Algebra I and II, and foundational topics in Calculus. I’m patient, organized, and committed to helping students not only improve their grades but also build confidence in their learning process. My approach focuses on breaking down complex material into understandable steps, just like a scientist would with their complex data, and creating a supportive environment for academic growth." less...
