"Hello, my name is Joel. I am from Peoria Heights, IL. I have been a substitute school teacher ever since the Spring of 2003. Although I have never held a tutoring position, I have substitute-taught in many classes and feel that I have acquired significant experience in the classroom.

My experience in substitute teaching has been mainly at the elementary level including the following subject areas: English, Reading, Phonics, Math, Science, Social Studies, Vocabulary, and Geography.

If for example, I was going to tutor vocabulary studies to students, then I would use the approach of getting more familiar with the dictionary and how to use it wisely. When a student can master breaking down words into syllables and then figure out what one means, then they can develop a better understanding at defining words. This the approach that I would take in assisting students in improving their vocabulary skills. If I was to tutor math, then I would take the approach in solving problems step-by-step and always to use formulas. I believe that it will provide the student with a better understanding in solving math problems. When it relates to reading and comprehending, I have always found it beneficial to highlight all important ideas and terms as I read. This gave me a better understanding of what I was reading and helped myself comprehend better. I would definitely use this approach if I was tutoring students in reading/comprehension. This approach would be beneficial with Social Studies and Science too.

I do believe that my several years of substitute school teaching experience would make me a valuable asset in the lives of students in need of tutoring assistance. I have always had an interest in tutoring along with substitute school teaching, but I have never had the opportunity to pursue individual tutoring. I am very flexible on hours that I would be available to tutor. Flexibility is very important to students as well so my main goal is to work around the students schedule.
