"Hi! I’m Seren. I have been teaching and tutoring for nearly twenty years, both in the U.S. and abroad. I taught English as a Foreign Language in Madrid, Spain, to students of all levels and ages, and later I tutored academic writing and test prep to elementary and high school students in the U.S. For the last thirteen years, I lived in Hong Kong where I taught both associate degree and high school students English, literature, and writing – everything from persuasive essays to literary analysis to short stories. I also helped students with personal statements for university applications.

I’ve always loved reading and writing, which is why I focused on English literature in my undergraduate years at UC Berkeley, where I earned a bachelor’s degree in English. Later, I earned a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Goddard College. I also have a Post Graduate Teaching Certificate from the University of Sunderland in the UK.

Though I enjoy classroom teaching, I really love getting to work one-on-one with a student or in small groups. My focus is on meeting a student where they’re at with an assignment—whether it’s the very beginning or near the end—and guiding and supporting them through the next steps, whether it’s planning or proofreading, identifying and making use of text evidence, or preparing for an exam.
