"Following a career as a journalist, I began teaching in 2011 and switched to subbing and tutoring in 2018. I specialize in French (all levels) and English (literature, writing, ACT/SAT/GMAT prep, and college essays), but I also enjoy editing/proofreading research papers and teaching Italian and German.
I am patient and kind, and encourage students to reach their potential. Confidence is a key to success; when students feel positive about their progress, they are more motivated to succeed.
My college majors were Journalism, English literature and French, and I earned a Master's in Journalism from Columbia University. While in NYC I worked as a journalist (TIME Magazine), freelance writer, editor and fact-checker. I enjoy reading and discussing literature, particularly the use of literary devices. I have helped more than 80 students with college application essays and personal statements, and they all received numerous acceptances. I enjoy helping college and grad school students structure and edit extensive research papers.
I spent junior year in France at a full-immersion university. Starting in 2011, I taught seven years of high school French. More recently, I spent three months subbing for an AP/French 2 teacher and have tutored students at all levels. I keep my skills current with frequent visits to France.
As an adult, I studied Italian for seven years and also met weekly with a native speaker. I enrolled in a language and cooking class in Bologna, and return to Italy often.
While studying in France, I often visited relatives in Germany, many of whom spoke no English. This motivated me to master the language. Two years ago I subbed for a high school German teacher during her two-month leave, covering her AP German and German I classes.
Former students tell me I helped them through difficult times and motivated them towards success. I understand life's pressures, and adapt well to different learning styles and abilities. I hope to work with you or your child. - Linda" less...
