"Hi, I’m Zoë! I am a museum exhibit designer and received my PhD in English from Columbia University, a master’s from Oxford, and my bachelor's from the University of California, Berkeley, where I graduated as the English department’s top student. I have been teaching and mentoring students from high school to the graduate level for over a decade. I care deeply about the written word as a scholar, published writer, and teacher, and love observing my students gain confidence in their writing, analytic, and critical thinking skills.
At Columbia I taught as instructor of record and discussion seminar leader for ten courses over five years. As a University Writing instructor, I taught writing, rhetoric, and composition to first-year college students across all majors and from diverse backgrounds, including first-generation, returning, and transfer students, as well as English language learners and student parents. 100% of respondents in a teaching evaluation for a section I taught called Literary Texts and Critical Methods rated my teaching effectiveness with a 5/5.
I particularly enjoy working with students on academic writing, college, and graduate school applications. Applying to college can feel overwhelming, and I know how helpful it can be to receive guidance on essay-writing and personal statement crafting from an experienced mentor. I also possess insight into what evaluation boards look for in competitive application contexts; since 2020, I have served on the UC Berkeley Rhodes, Marshall, and Mitchell Scholarship nomination and interview committees.
I currently work as an essay specialist and college consultant for a Boston-based tutoring company and also work as a professional editor on books published in both academic and trade presses.
I greatly enjoy offering students academic support and tutoring and have a flexible schedule. I am available to tutor in person locally as well as virtually. I welcome you to get in touch if you have any questions or would like to schedule a lesson." less...
