"I am successful in guiding students through even very challenging reading and writing assignments. Through lively dialogues and examples/visuals of model essays, I help students who tend to freeze when faced with difficult passages or tasks. At first insecure, my students become confident and secure in the material and clear on how to tackle assignments. With clear understanding, students enjoy their work. Students move from confusion to clarity, insecurity to secure ideas. I see the spark in my students’ eyes when they glean the meaning of even the most challenging texts and are confident in how to proceed. It is the greatest moment when students enjoy the material, and we even laugh about it, as we wade through text and subtext, moving from discussion into the fun of writing with clarity and purpose.
My background includes a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Barnard College of Columbia University and a Master’s degree in Educational Theatre from Adelphi University, earning a 4.0 GPA. My studies have involved extensive writing and research on literature, philosophy, and drama. I also have teaching certifications in English, grades 7-12 and in Theatre, K-12. I have taught English for five years. I am now available to tutor grades 7-12 and at the college level.
As a recent Master’s in Theatre graduate, I am sensitive to feelings of “stage fright” students may have in reading and writing. Stage fright is common when approaching new challenges. With my personable connection, students are put at ease. I encourage students to ask any questions they have that clouds their understanding. I provide answers, imparting knowledge and intuition. Working together, student and tutor find an antidote to stage fright.
Let’s begin our talks toward greater understanding and higher grades. I offer a 15 minute “chemistry” session to sample our work together." less...
