"Hello! I’m Phillip Y., a Johns Hopkins University graduate with a B.A. in Mathematics and Philosophy and a master’s in education from the University of Pennsylvania. I’m currently pursuing a part-time master’s in mathematics.
As a middle school math teacher in Manhattan (transitioning to high school next semester), I often hear students say math is tough, complex, or even unenjoyable. My goal is to understand your learning style, strengths, weaknesses, and preferences to guide you on your mathematical journey. In our sessions, I start by listening to grasp your thought process, then use a mix of guided and self-practice to help you master challenging topics. Lessons are paced to your speed, background, and needs—whether you prefer a deep dive or a quick review for an upcoming exam.
My experience includes:
- 5 years tutoring SAT Math, ACT Math, and competition math (AMC8, AMC10, AMC12, AIME).
- 2 years teaching 5th-8th grade math and 3 years privately tutoring Algebra II to AP Calculus AB/BC.
- Teaching university-level precalculus as a sole instructor.
- TA experience in Linear Algebra, Discrete Mathematics, Calculus II, and Probability/Statistics at JHU.
I know math can feel intimidating—I’ve been there! I’m skilled at breaking down complex concepts into manageable, digestible pieces and scaffolding them effectively. If you’re tackling college-level courses like Calculus, Linear Algebra, Discrete Mathematics, or Probability/Statistics, I can help with those too.
I look forward to working with you in our sessions! :)" less...
