"Hello all! I have recently graduated from the University of Olivet with a Bachelor's degree in English, as well as just narrowly missing a writing minor as a result of a missing requirement. While I've enjoyed helping people throughout my entire school career, I didn't start officially tutoring until my final year at Olivet. With the hiring of a new professor, Olivet's Writing Center began to get traction, and I was one of the first tutors to be put in place. The first semester of the Writing Center being in place was incredibly slow, and I only had a handful of students. On the other hand, the second semester saw a massive influx of students, and I was able to get a ton of experience during this time. A large majority of my students were college freshmen ranging from 18-19, but I did have a few upperclassmen come to me as well. On top of this, I had a couple of dual-enrolled high school students that were a little younger, but not by a significant amount. Though this opportunity was largely independent, we had month-long training sessions for new and old tutors that really broke down different methods and approaches to students, so I applied a variety of tactics throughout my time here.

My experience at Olivet's Writing Center was something that fundamentally changed how I view education. Many students claim to hate school and feel as though it's a waste of time. As a tutor, you come to understand that this is heavily rooted in the fact that some professors and teachers simply don't provide enough one-on-one time with students in order to actively engage them. On top of this, some teaching styles click better with some students than others, and sometimes a tutor is all someone needs to understand an assignment. though my tutoring experience is limited in multiple areas, I hope to provide as much help that I can to anyone who needs it." less...
