"My name is Dominic, or as many of the students call me: Mr J. As a Paraeducator for San Diego Unified for more than a year, I work both in one-on-one, as well as small group settings, in multiple subjects, but with math being my main focus. I have worked with all grade levels between K-8, but currently work with middle school pupils. I previously tutored high school students in Algebra and Geometry for 2+ years, the latter of which I excelled in during high school and college. After receiving an Associates degree at San Diego Mesa College and additional schooling at UCSD, I initially chose a profession in concrete construction, estimating projects. I taught and trained many employees which was something that came easy to me. Eventually, it brought me back to what I love doing most: helping students with their school work, which is my current profession with SDUSD.

My approach is simple: everything is step-by-step, using real world examples when necessary, and with repetition in order to retain the subject matter. Classroom instruction can be distracting, with many students feeling left behind, intimidated or embarrassed to ask for additional help. I show students that math can be rewarding, and I push to instill the confidence needed to ask when something does not make sense or if they feel they are falling behind. The positive reinforcement I provide motivates my students to do more, and gain a better appreciation for their own success.
